Celebrating Art for Black History Month: Vakseen & Princella Seripenah
For our next Black History Month feature, we're celebrating the work of artist and pop culture historian, Vakseen, as well as a new artist to Fine Art Canvas, Princella Seripenah.
We've spoken at length about Otha Davis III. Known professionally as Vakseen, the artist is well known for his homages to pop culture icons and memorable moments. His vibrant and eclectic style makes his pieces stand out in any space and also makes his work instantly recognizable.
Vakseen's art reflects the popular zeitgeist and mania surrounding fame and modern stardom. His art speaks to the impossibility of celebrity culture, highlighting the absurdism of the thinly veiled illusion of perfection that many celebrities wear to cultivate their fame. Each hand-painted composition features eye-catching color palettes which demonstrate the truth of pivotal images and moments in our society.
Despite his overall focus on depicting modern society's artifice, Vakseen's candy-colored canvases speak to influential moments within his community and the black experience. Many of his subjects are, in fact, influential black artists, athletes, and activists whose existence and work paved the way for others within hermetic and very often hostile industries or environments. Using the medium of portraiture, a form once reserved for royalty and heads of state, Vakseen elevates these figures to their rightful place in the collective consciousness.
