Celebrating Art for Black History Month: Vakseen & Princella Seripenah

For our next Black History Month feature, we're celebrating the work of artist and pop culture historian, Vakseen, as well as a new artist to Fine Art Canvas, Princella Seripenah

By Any Means by Vakseen

We've spoken at length about Otha Davis III. Known professionally as Vakseen, the artist is well known for his homages to pop culture icons and memorable moments. His vibrant and eclectic style makes his pieces stand out in any space and also makes his work instantly recognizable.

One With The Game by Vakseen

Vakseen's art reflects the popular zeitgeist and mania surrounding fame and modern stardom. His art speaks to the impossibility of celebrity culture, highlighting the absurdism of the thinly veiled illusion of perfection that many celebrities wear to cultivate their fame. Each hand-painted composition features eye-catching color palettes which demonstrate the truth of pivotal images and moments in our society.

Hail The Queen by Vakseen

Despite his overall focus on depicting modern society's artifice, Vakseen's candy-colored canvases speak to influential moments within his community and the black experience. Many of his subjects are, in fact, influential black artists, athletes, and activists whose existence and work paved the way for others within hermetic and very often hostile industries or environments. Using the medium of portraiture, a form once reserved for royalty and heads of state, Vakseen elevates these figures to their rightful place in the collective consciousness.

Ghanaian-born freelance illustrator Princella Ntumwine Seripenah always knew she wanted to make people feel better. Princella decided to study medicine to follow her calling, immersing herself in the study of healing.

Shortly after beginning her third year of medical school, Princella realized another way to spread joy and healing.

Inner Peace I by Princella Seripenah

Diving into the world of art after setting it aside for her studies, Princella began to experiment with digital art. Through the medium of illustration, she began to understand how art can be influential in conveying inspiration and imparting "the most wholesome feelings" in people.

Worthy. Loved. Cared For by Princella Seripenah

Princella's art style combines earthy tones in carefully crafted scenes centered around mental health, self-identity, black womanhood, and confidence.

Glorified Vessel by Princella Seripenah

Princella's style is equal parts minimalist and luxurious. Her hand-drawn pieces combine various elements such as patterns, noise, and strategic lines to convey texture and interest. Additionally, her warm color palettes help create cohesive compositions that fit in seamlessly with existing decor pieces, no matter the style. Regardless, each piece curates a sense of well-being that makes them perfect for your home or office space.

Far More Precious by Princella Seripenah

Whether you're drawn to colorful, eye-catching compositions that jump off the walls, or you're searching for a bit of inspiration in your space, there are countless artists in our Black is Beautiful collection with pieces that are perfect for your home. And if you're looking for something inspirational? We have tons of quotes in our new typography collection waiting to brighten up your space.
